Abruzzo is one of the Italian regions that is experiencing, with some first successes, ozone therapy in the treatment of coronavirus: to announce this fact, is Dr Enrico Marini, Head of the Department of Medicine of San Salvatore in Atri, guest on Raiuno’s live show La Vita In diretta.

In Atri, for some days, thanks to the purchase of the necessary devices, ozone therapy has started, already used for a first patient of 60 years that seems to have responded well, since it has negativized and very soon he will be discharged.

This trial was started by the hospital of Udine where out of 36 patients with pneumonia and respiratory difficulties, only one was intubated: the others have all improved and some, even, already discharged.

The goal of this sperimentation is to understand in the field whether ozone therapy can become the most effective clinical response in patients who have contracted Covid-19 and struggle to avoid hospitalization in intensive care.

Scientific evidence argues that chronic and elderly patients undergoing ozone therapy are more resistant to infections. It has already been well demonstrated that ozone, normally produced by the white blood cells, carries out simultaneously the following actions: anti-inflammatory, antibacterial and static virus, increases mitochondrial activity and production of ATP, improves microcirculation and tissue oxygenation; it is pointed out not as an alternative to the use of drugs but it is indicated when these are contraindicated. All this without leaving traces in the environment, in a natural manner. The oxygen-ozone therapy has low costs and could be practiced everywhere.

It is a practice already used for other diseases and does not present contraindications nor the side effects, typical of medicines: it is to inject oxygen in patients and use its anti-inflammatory properties. The technique is already successfully used in some hospitals in northern Italy, while Atri is the first hospital in Abruzzo to perform such treatments and is the second in the center-south.

The use of ozone in Covid-19 infection finds its ratio both in the mode of transmission of the virus and in its mechanism of action. Oxygen-ozone therapy has a powerful anti-inflammatory power that is expressed through the release of cytokines with immunostimulating or immunodepressing activities. It is hypothesized that the virustatical action of ozone, used topically, orally, nasally and ocularly, can allow the reduction of the viral load so as to extinguish the outbreak in the infection with Covid19 with improvement of oxygenation and lung function.
