Ozone therapy can be used to treat people positive to Coronavirus. With a letter sent on 24 March to the Scientific Society of Oxygen Ozone Therapy (SIOOT), the Scientific Secretariat of the President of the Higher Institute of Health (ISS) «considers it appropriate» the use of ozone therapy for the treatment of people found positive to Coronavirus.
As reported by editorial staff Orbisphera, it is indicated the proposal of the SIOOT protocol for a possible use of Oxygen Ozone Therapy «in the treatment of interstitial coronavirus pneumonia has been carefully evaluated by some experts of the ISS».
The data effectively available regarding the proposed indication consist essentially in the demonstration of the effectiveness of the ozone in killing the virus in cells of monkey, and in the clinical experience of the benefit found in patients suffering from bronchopneumonitis». The proposal to use ozone oxygen is also supported by clinical centres with expertise in the treatment of viral pneumonia, the “Istituto Superiore di Sanità” considers it appropriate that the treatment itself can be carried out, after obtaining the informed consent of the patient, by doctors with specific experience and with the availability of appropriate instrumentation, as described in detail in the protocol itself».
In the past, the ” Istituto Superiore di Sanità” had also been involved in gathering information on the problems related to the use of oxygen-ozone therapy.
The ” Istituto Superiore di Sanità” had also recognized «the antibacterial and antiviral activity of the treatment with ozone oxygen has been ascertained with regard to the blood used for transfusion and the blood derivatives».
The ” Istituto Superiore di Sanità” had also recognized “Ozone as virucidal agent”
The virucid activity of ozone occurs rapidly as a result of ozonization. As with many other disinfection products, there is no specific information on the efficacy against SARS COV2. On the other hand, several studies are available that support its virucida effectiveness in health and non-health environments. Even at low concentrations, with high humidity, ozone has a high action disinfectant virucida in air». This is what is written in a document entitled “Interim recommendations on sanitization of non-health structures in the current emergency COVID-19: surfaces, indoor environments and clothing” signed by the Istituto Superiore di Sanità (ISS). Date of publication: 15 May 2020.
The document of the Istituto Superiore di Sanità continues by stating that «The International Ozone Association (https://www.ioa-pag.org) confirms the effectiveness of ozone for the inactivation of many viruses even if it is not aware of specific research on SARS-Cov-2».
The ISS document explains that ‘Ozone is an unstable gas and decays spontaneously to oxygen. The time required for ozone decay, depending on temperature, humidity and chemical and biological contamination, is always in function of the concentrations of use».
The document also states that «At industrial level ozone is generated in situ by ozonators, which must be adapted from time to time in relation to the spaces (dimensions, materials involved) and targets» and that «Ozone generators must comply with the directives on low voltage (Directive 2014/35/EC), electromagnetic compatibility (Directive 2014/30/EC) and Directive 2011/65/EC (Rohs) on the restriction of dangerous substances».
In terms of environmental risks for surface treatment for surface treatment, the ISS states that it is «at present negligible, given the high percentage of ozone normally present in the atmosphere».
