Ozone – A Biological Therapy in Dentistry – Reality or Myth?
Naik SV, K R, Kohli S, Zohabhasan S, Bhatia S.
ABSTRACT:
The usage of ozone in dentistry has been proposed because of its antimicrobial, disinfectant, biocompatibility and healing properties. Dental professionals need to know the proper usage of ozone therapy that can provide better patient care and considerably cut down the time and cost of the treatment. Ozone is a promising treatment modality for various dental problems.

Ozone therapy in Dentistry: A strategic review
Saini R.
ABSTRACT:
The oral cavity appears as an open ecosystem, with a dynamic balance between the entrance of microorganisms, colonization modalities, and host defenses aimed to their removal: to avoid elimination, bacteria need to adhere to either hard dental surfaces or epithelial surfaces. Ozone (O3) is a triatomic molecule, consisting of three oxygen atoms, and its application in medicine and dentistry has been indicated for the treatment of 260 different pathologies. The ozone therapy has been more beneficial than present conventional therapeutic modalities that follow a minimally invasive and conservative application to dental treatment. The exposition of molecular mechanisms of ozone further benefits practical function in dentistry.

Antimicrobial effects of ozonated water on the sanitization of dental instruments contaminated with E.Coli, S.aureus, C.albicans, or the spores of B. atrophaeus
César J, Sumita TC, Junqueira JC, Jorge AO, do Rego MA. Dental School, Taubaté University, UNITAU, Taubaté, SP, Brazil.
ABSTRACT:
Ozone has been used as an alternative method for the decontamination of water, food, equipment and instruments. The objective of this study was to evaluate the antimicrobial effects of ozonated water on the sanitization of dental instruments that were contaminated by Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Candida albicans and the spores of Bacillus atrophaeus.

Prevention of Cross-contamination by Disinfection with Ozonated Water
Savabi O, Nejatidanesh F, Bagheri KP, Karimi L, Savabi G.
ABSTRACT:
Disinfection of dental impression is mandatory for preventing the cross infection between dental staff and dental laboratory. Ozone as a disinfectant can be used in various ways in dentistry.

Ozone therapy: A clinical review
Elvis, A. M., & Ekta, J. S. (2011).
ABSTRACT:
Medical O3 is used to disinfect and treat disease. Mechanism of actions is by inactivation of bacteria, viruses, fungi, yeast and protozoa, stimulation of oxygen metabolism, activation of the immune system. Diseases treated are infected wounds, circulatory disorders, geriatric conditions, macular degeneration, viral diseases, rheumatism/arthritis, cancer, SARS and AIDS.

Effect of low-dose gaseous ozone on pathogenic bacteria
Fontes, Belchor et al. 18 Dec. 2012
ABSTRACT:
Treatment of chronically infected wounds is a challenge, and bacterial environmental contamination is a growing issue in infection control. Ozone may have a role in these situations. The objective of this study was to determine whether a low dose of gaseous ozone/oxygen mixture eliminates pathogenic bacteria.

A comparison of ozonation and chlorination for the disinfection of stainless steel surfaces.
Greene AK1, Few BK, Serafini JC
ABSTRACT:
Chlorinated sanitizers have been used exetensively in the dairy industry for many years. Recently questions have arisen concerning effects of chlorine-based sanitizers. Chlorination can pose health risks to humans because of carcinogenic compiunds. A possible alternative to chlorinated sanitizing agents is ozonated water.Ozonated water and chlorinated sanitizer were compared for effectiveness against biofilms of milk spoilage bacteria.

Evaluation of Ozone Application in Dental Unit Water Lines Contaminated with Pathogenic Acanthamoeba
Wafaa HIKAL,*,1 Basma ZAKI,2 and Hany SABRY3
ABSTRACT:
The quality of dental unit waterlines (DUWLs) is of considerable importance since patients and dental staff are regularly exposed to water and aerosols generated from the dental unit. The unique feature of dental chair water lines is the capacity for rapid development of a biofilm on the dental water supply lines combined with the generation of potentially contaminated aerosols. Dental water may be ingested, inhaled in the form of aerosols or directly contaminate surgical wounds. Ozone is 1.5-times stronger than chlorine and is effective over a much wider spectrum of microorganisms than chlorine and other disinfectants. The aim of this study was therefore first; detect the presence of Acanthamoeba species in dental water unit. evaluate the levels of disinfection achievable in vitro and by the application of ozone disinfectant to DUWLs.

Does Topical Ozone Therapy Improve Patient Comfort After Surgical Removal of Impacted Mandibular Third Molar? A Randomized Controlled Trial
Sivalingam VP1, Panneerselvam E2, Raja KV3, Gopi G4
ABSTRACT:
A single clinical trial was designed involving patients who required removal of bilateral impacted mandibular third molars. Ozone gel was found to be an effective topical agent that considerably improves patient comfort postoperatively and can be considered a substitute of postoperative systemic antibiotics.

Water and air ozone treatment as an alternative sanitizing technology
M. Martinelli, F. Giovannangeli, S. Rotunno,1C.M. Trombetta, and E. Montomoli
ABSTRACT:
We investigated the effectiveness of ozone (aqueous and gaseous) treatment as an alternative sanitizing technology to common conventional disinfectants in reducing the microbial contamination of both water and air.
